History Of Public Speaking

From the ancient civilizations the value of public speech has been well accepted. It has become renowned in the BC era. The public speaking is found to be in existence in all the civilizations and even now. Speaking in front of groups is done to educate, inform, entertain and persuade. Throughout the ages, public speaking has evolved from something that was probably done by a caveman standing upon a large rock to something that utilizes sophisticated audio and even video technology.

Today, a public speaker can reach millions thanks to the technology of television and Internet. He or she can just as easily address any size group in person using audio amplification such as speakers and microphones. Although the technology has changed over the years, the anxiety that many people feel in regards to public speaking has not. If you researched the subject you would find that a fear of speaking in public is on most people's top five fears list. Maybe you're one of the lucky ones who feels totally confident when speaking in front of a group. If you're not, there are lots of ways to gain confidence in your skills.

It all depends on what your strengths and weaknesses are when it comes to speaking in front of others. Some people aren't confident in their voice and may speak too softly. Others might have a tendency to speak too loudly, or too quickly. Maintaining a good volume and depth to your voice is important. In addition to vocal quality, good material is something else that is crucial for public speaking success. You could have the most commanding, appealing voice in the world but it means nothing without quality material.

Throughout the history of public speaking, there have been certain speeches, and speakers, who have stood above the rest. Examples may include Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address or Martin Luther King's 'I have a dream' speech. These particular speeches happened to contain extremely meaningful and compelling material delivered by dynamic, confident speakers who knew how to capture an audience. Studying classic speeches and the techniques of successful speakers both past and present can help you find greater success in your own public speaking endeavors.
