Public Speaking Jobs
Are you gifted with the natural ability of speaking? Many people are rather anxious at the prospect of speaking in front of a group. Then there are individuals who seem to take to public speaking like a duck to water. For these people, public speaking jobs make a great career. You may not even have realized that public speaker is a job description. There are actually companies that will pay you just for giving a speech. For some jobs you will provide your own speech, for others you will be told what to say.
Sometimes, you can book your own public speaking engagements on your own or with the help of an agent. It all depends on what you have to offer. For example, maybe you are an advocate for a certain charity or nonprofit organization. It will be your job to travel around to various locations and give speeches which encourage public donations and participation for the cause you are trying to assist. Or, you may be a speaker who travels to certain types of organizations like schools or churches to get a certain message across.
Then there are corporate speakers, whose job it often is to motivate employees. You may be called upon to encourage employees to be more productive, creative or successful. Motivational speakers are commonly used in a team setting. Sales teams and athletic teams are two types of teams for which a public speaker may be hired. If you want to start a career as a speaker, you will need a portfolio and publicity package. You must be able to demonstrate to potential clients what you can do for them. The best way to do this is with examples of past speeches given. If you don't have any previous jobs to your credit, create your own samples by recording yourself giving a speech that relates to the type of job you're trying to get.
Another way to get public speaking jobs is to become more involved in the industry. There are associations and organizations especially for professional speakers. There are often events for affiliated speakers where you can network and learn more about working in this field. Another great way to track down jobs is to learn to job hunt on the Internet. If you plan to travel for your speaking career (and most speakers do) you can find jobs all over the country and even the world listed online.
