Public Speaking Toastmaster
There public speaking toastmaster tips are found in abundance. The Internet is the richest source of all. A toastmaster is someone who directs a toast. The speech given may be brief or it may be rather long. It all depends on your role as toastmaster and what you have to say. No matter what the details are, there are some tips, techniques and rules that can help you be a more effective public speaker.
First, learn to be confident with your own voice. If you're not used to giving speeches you may feel nervous when speaking up in front of a group. Practice with friends and family or record yourself. Learn to project your voice without yelling. Next, learn the material you will be speaking until you know it by memory. Confidence in the material translates into confidence when speaking. Make your voice interesting and varied depending on what you're saying. No one wants to hear a monotone speaker. Pace your speech as appropriate to its content.
Humor is a perfect addition to any speech. However, you don't want to open your speech with a joke. Tasteful jokes are great for the middle or end of your speech. Make sure you've considered everyone in your audience before adding jokes to your speech. Jokes should be clean and respectful. Another aspect of a great speech is the anecdote. An anecdote is a short biographical story that relates in some way to the subject matter of the speech. Luckily for those who feel nervous when confronted with public speaking, toasts are usually quite brief.
Another one of the best public speaking toastmaster tips is to relate to your audience. Make eye contact. If you are nervous once you get up there, don't be afraid to admit it. If you're especially shaky before speaking, simply telling the crowd that you're a little nervous can calm you and gain their empathy. I say empathy instead of sympathy because like you, many people get nervous when speaking in public. Taking a deep breath or two before continuing on can help you gain confidence which will show in your speech. For more tips, read a book about public speaking such as The Toastmaster's Manual by Harold W. Donahue.
